One of America's most renowned living fiction writers, John Updike, will be the guest of the Kentucky Author Forum on February 25, 1997. Updike is the author of over 40 books, including collections of short stories, poems, and criticism. His novels have won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the American Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

As a guest of the Kentucky Author Forum, Updike will discuss his latest book Golf Dreams (Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.), a collection of stories and essays on man's eternal battle with that small, dimpled white ball. The Massachusetts writer will also answer questions about In the Beauty of the Lilies (Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.), which The New York Times calls Updike's most ambitious novel to date. In the book, Updike charts the fortunes of an American family through four generations to create a portrait of the country, from its nervous entry into the 20th century to its stumbling approach toward the millennium.

Updike will be interviewed by Robert Siegel, a host of National Public Radio's award-winning news magazine show All Things Considered. During his 20-plus years with NPR, Siegel has served in numerous roles and has received many awards for his excellence in broadcast journalism.

U of L faculty, staff, and students may purchase tickets to the evening forum for $5 each at the Kentucky Center for the Arts box office or the drive-through ticket counter at the entrance between Fifth and Main Streets. A U of L identification must be presented.

A dinner honoring Updike and Siegel, hosted by University of Louisville President Dr. John W. Shumaker, follows the book signing. Tickets are available for an additional $85 ($60 tax deductible). A package price of $100 includes all events plus dinner and can be purchased only through the Kentucky Center ticket office (no reduced ticket price for dinner event).

The Kentucky Author Forum is a non-profit cultural project sponsored by the University of Louisville in honor of its Bicentennial and in cooperation with the Kentucky Center for the Arts and Hawley-Cooke Booksellers. The series features major authors in an interview setting. The next forum on March 25, 1997 will feature Katharine Graham, publisher of the The Washington Post, with her book Personal History. She will be interviewed by NBC White House correspondent Andrea Mitchell.
