The Kentucky Author Forum
welcomes Patricia Scott Schroeder January 12, 1999
Louisville, Kentucky |
Former Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, president and CEO of the Association of American Publishers (AAP), is the next guest of the Kentucky Author Forum on January 12, 1999 in Louisville, Kentucky. The AAP is the national trade organization of the U.S. book publishing industry. Schroeder will discuss her latest book, 24 Years of House Work...And the Place is Still A Mess.
Schroeder left Congress undefeated in 1996 after serving in the House of Representatives for 24 years. For the first half of 1997, she was a professor at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton Unniversity, before assuming her post at AAP on June 1 of that year. She is currently leading New Century/New Solutions, an out-of-the-box think tank, for the Institute for Civil Society in Newton, Massachusetts.
Schroeder attended Harvard Law School, one of only 15 women in a class of more than 500 men. She earned her J.D. in 1964 and moved to Denver, Colorado with her husband James, who encouraged her to challenge an incumbent Republican for Colorado's First Congressional District seat in 1972. The mother of two young children at her election, Schroeder went on to serve 12 terms in the House of Representatives.
During her tenure in the House, she became the Dean of Congressional Women, co-chaired the Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues for ten years, and served on the House Judiciary Committee as well as several other committees. She was instrumental in bringing the Family and Medical Leave Act to fruition in 1993, a fitting legislative achievement for her lifetime of work on behalf of women's and family issues.
Patricia Schroeder will be interviewed by Eleanor Clift, contributing editor to Newsweek and CNN. Mrs. Schroeder is also author of another book: Champion of the Great American Family (Random House, 1989).
